While pashminas are quite pretty without any embellishment, an embroidered pashmina or beaded shawl are truly spectacular. Because they are a bit more dressy than a solid color, they are a perfect addition to eveningwear or that ubiquitous little black dress.
What makes a beaded pashmina so special? Take a look at this information about the origin and making of a pashmina shawl.
Pashminas in History
The extremely soft and fine material of pashmina wool has long been associated with royalty and the most wealthy patrons in society. In the 16th century, east Indian royalty were the only ones who could afford expensive pashmina cashmere. In the 18th century, the fabric was enjoyed by many wealthy Europeans. Napoleon is credited with part of its popularity; he gifted a cashmere pashmina shawl to Josephine and soon all of her inner circle just had to have one, too.
The Unique Qualities of Pashmina
There is truly no other fabric in the world like pure pashmina wool. Each fiber's gauge is so fine that it took a special loom, developed at the end of the 18th century, to make weaving the material less labor intensive. Even so, some items can take up to four months to create.
Real pashmina cashmere is produced only by a particular type of mountain goat and taken from the extremely soft and fluffy undercoat of these animals only once yearly, in the spring.
Pashmina wool fibers, while very fine, are also surprisingly durable. As well, it gets softer and feels more gentle with subsequent wearings. This makes it ideal for any item which touches your skin, such as blankets, scarves, and stoles.
A Beaded Pashmina is Unique
Wearing a beaded pashmina shawl should remind women of the traditions which have produced these unique and beautiful fashion accessories from past centuries. An embroidered pashmina was once reserved for only the top members of society but can now add a touch of luxury to any woman's wardrobe.
Try wearing your beautiful beaded pashmina over a simple outfit of one color to add a vibrant pop. An embroidered pashmina also looks quite lovely to cover bare shoulders when wearing a cocktail dress. Added to the neckline of a fall or winter sweater, a pashmina provides a unique focal point to an otherwise plain ensemble. There are so many ways to wear a pashmina shawl, the opportunities are nearly endless for providing a bit of punch to any piece in your closet.
